Lakewoods Village is conviently located approximately one hour from the entrance to Lava Beds National Monument. This amazing national park has over 700 lava caves, and is the largest concentration of caves in the continental U.S. Several of the caves are open for self-guided exploration. All caves are scored from Easy to Difficult so that you can select your level of exploration of these amazing wonders. When visiting you can see an array of beautiful colorful caves. Many caves contain ice and old Indian carvings and drawings
For the easy level caves all you need are a flashlight and hard hats are recommended. The more difficult caves require crawling in small places, so gloves and elbow and kneepads are needed. The visitor center lends out flashlights free of charge and also sells all other needed equipment. There is no food near this monument, so packing a picnic lunch is recommended.
The Visitor Center is open every day except December 25th.
